From Pitt Brothers Electric: We want you to understand what may be happening—not to take risks with live wiring. Electrical symptoms can have more than one cause, and this is general education, not an on-site diagnosis.
Why outdoor electricity has different challenges
Outdoor lights and receptacles are exposed to rain, humidity, UV light, changing temperatures, and dust. Moisture can make unintended electrical paths more likely; corrosion can increase contact resistance; and seals and gaskets can age.
Common causes of outdoor failures
Moisture or damaged weather protection
Water intrusion can trigger GFCI protection or damage parts over time. A cover may look intact but still allow water inside if it's not suitable for the use or installation.
Corrosion and worn connections
Oxidation and damaged contacts can weaken electrical connections. Poor connections may create voltage drops and heat.
Photocell or motion-sensor issues
Dusk-to-dawn and motion-sensing lights depend on sensors and control electronics. Incorrect settings, sensor placement, sunlight, or failed electronics may cause unexpected behavior.
A failed bulb, driver, or fixture
LED drivers and other fixture components have operating temperature and moisture limits. Parts can fail even if the external housing looks fine.
Power loss somewhere upstream
Outdoor outlets may be protected by a GFCI located elsewhere, and multiple lights may share a branch circuit.
Why correct exterior-rated components matter
Outdoor devices and covers are chosen for exposure conditions, not just appearance. An electrician can confirm that the installed equipment and circuit protection suit the actual location.
If outdoor equipment sparks, trips repeatedly, has exposed wiring, or shows water damage, avoid touching it and have a qualified electrician assess it.
