Here’s what to know. This guide explains the type of work and why it can be needed. It is not a remote diagnosis or a do-it-yourself wiring tutorial.
What might be happening?
Evaluating damaged appliance plugs and the outlets that supply them.
How does it work?
Darkened or melted plugs can signal poor contact, overload, or damaged wiring. Heat damage may also extend to the receptacle or appliance cord.
What affects the job?
Unplug only if it is safe to do so. Do not reuse damaged equipment or attempt to splice a new plug onto an unknown damaged cord without professional evaluation.
What should you tell us?
What stopped working, when it happens, and any noises, heat, smells, or visible damage. Do not attempt to recreate a fault for a photo. You do not need to know the electrical terms. Tell us what you see and what you want to change.
Keep safety in mind
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s home electrical checklist explains common warning signs. For generator-related jobs, see the Electrical Safety Foundation International’s generator guidance. Any code or permit decision needs to be checked for the actual property.
Is this what you need help with?
Tell us a little about your project and where you're located. We'll confirm whether it's a job we can take on and explain the next step.
